# Job Description. The successful candidate will be engaged in research and development (R&D) for a Sagri project that aims to create and sell carbon credits. The successful candidate will work on the development of process-based models to predict soil-vegetation dynamics (including soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions), and to evaluate model uncertainty using a Bayesian approach. The successful candidate may also be encouraged to take part in several other projects, such as digital soil mappingand soil spectroscopic analysis. It is expected that the successful applicant will undertake a design and evaluation of field trials in cooperation with our overseas business units. Sagri is promoting and taking an initiative in Japan and overseas to reduce GHG emissions and to create and sell carbon credits by analyzing soil from satellite data and enabling farmers to optimize their fertiliser management. The Sagri R&D Office aims to establish a methodology to prove that satellite data and farmers' input data from our farming apps will enable us to create carbon credits. Affiliation: R&D Office CRO Takashi Tanaka, Ph.D. (former associate professor at Gifu University, currently at Aarhus University, Denmark) and two members About a career as a researcher: Although Sagri is a private company, the successful candidate will be allowed, to some extent, to pursue his/her own research interests and to develop a further research career through a wide range of academic activities such as writing peer-reviewed papers and participating in international conferences. In addition, subject to the applicant's performance and aptitude, a custom working environment will be made to meet his/her requests. For example, the successful candidate may remain employed in and/or affiliated with a university or research institution whilst performing a cutting-edge research for Sagri (in the form of a contract such as outsourcing or joint research). We welcome those who wish to take an academic position in the future. Brief introduction on Sagri app for farmers: The app visualises a spatial distribution of farmland soil properties d predicted by satellite data, and helps farmers reduce fertiliser use, thereby contributing to mitigation of GHG emissions from agricultural activities.We have been developing this app with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan. Generally, fertiliser management strategy (e.g., when, how much, and what types of fertilisers) largely depends on farmers' experience and expectations of how crops respond to fertilization. The excessive uses of fertilizers increases not only the input costs, but also environmental loads. In contrast to our remote-sensed data analysis, conventional quantification of in situ soil chemical properties is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process that involves soil sample collection and chemical analysis in a laboratory. Reducing chemical fertilisers does reduce GHG emissions and will in turn create carbon credits. We are striving hard to enrich farmers especially in developing countries through an extensive use of satellite datasets. Skills, experience & qualification needed: ■Expertise in mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, and machine learning ■Japanese proficiency (Not mandatory but desirable) ■PhD. degree is desirable.
